Tattooing is one of humanity’s oldest forms of visual expression. From the ritual practices of Polynesian cultures and indigenous peoples to the identity marks of ancient Egypt and Japan, tattooing originated as a symbolic, spiritual and social language.
Marginalised in the West for centuries and associated with deviance or folklore, tattooing has gradually been rediscovered as an artistic practice. In the 20th century, they entered into dialogue with contemporary art: the body became a surface, a living archive, a political and aesthetic space.
Today, tattoos cross disciplinary boundaries, blending tradition, experimentation and new technologies, and have established themselves as an art form in their own right, capable of expressing identity, memory and transformation.
On 30 January at the CAM museum, 14 tattoo artists will bring their art to the skin and the exhibition space.
